Description: Donald Hirschhorn recalls his military service at the very end and just following World War II. He served briefly in the New York State Guard, training at Camp Smith in Peekskill, N.Y., and then enlisted in the U.S. Army. Although he hoped to serve in Europe as part of the post-war Army of Occupation, he ended up spending nine months in the Panama Canal Zone before being discharged.
