Description: Marilyn Reichstein's father was a member of Temple Gates of Prayer in downtown Flushing. He helped found the Flushing Jewish Center on Northern Boulevard and 170th Street, which is now a Chinese church. The Flushing Jewish Center was built in a former private estate. A school and auditorium building were later built. There was a fire, and since there was no longer a Jewish community in the area, the property was sold. There were not many Jews in the neighborhood, at most four or five Jewish families lived on Marilyn's block. Her family did not observe the sabbath, but were active in the synagogue. Her parents made sure the kids had a Jewish education. According to Marilyn, social life, especially in school, was stratified according to religion.
