Richmond Hill Record Printing Blocks

Identifier: aql:15902

Description: This collection is completely non-textual in nature, consisting as it does, exclusively of printing blocks. There are a little over 50 blocks of varying sizes, though most are about 4 inches in length and 3 inches in width. These were the actual blocks on which the particular illustrations were photoengravers. Each item consists of a very thin copper plate nailed to a thick and slightly larger block of wood. The copper plate contains the engraving. These plates were then used in the printing process. With but few exceptions, most plates are identified, however, briefly, but sometimes difficult to read in some cases. The blocks are divided into two series, Firemen and/or Fire Department Scenes.; and Miscellaneous Scenes. A complete list follows. Descriptions are essentially those found on the blocks. Measurements are only approximations. We do not know what portion of the original scenes these blocks represent.
