Historical/Biographical Note
No biographical information regarding the Amory family has been found. Judging from the documents in the collection they were residents of Manhattan. The name was occasionally spelled as Emery.
James and Martha Amory were married and owned three or four pieces of property, most in lower Manhattan around the Bowery, another around 71st Street off Fifth Avenue, probably in the area which was later to become part of Central Park. James Amory died in 1842 and Martha may have been the administrator of her late husband James Amory’s estate.

Scope and Content Note
There are approximately 90 documents in this collection, the vast majority being receipted bills, especially tax bills submitted by New York City. Many of the other documents are rental agreements submitted by tenants of property which Mrs. Amory owned.
Documents are dated from the late 1830s to 1850. There are a few documents, dated ca. 1848 which bear the name, Mrs. Martha Amory Adine, perhaps indicating that Mrs. Amory married again at that time. All documents are arranged in chronological order.
