Historical/Biographical Note

Howard Strong Conklin was born on his father’s farm in East Patchogue, Long Island on September 5, 1863. His early years were spent working on the farm and attending the district school. He graduated from Patchogue High School in June of 1882, and then attended the Eastman Business School in Poughkeepsie, graduating in December of 1882. In the fall of 1883 Conklin took a job as a bookkeeper and cashier for a business in Brooklyn, remaining there until the spring of the following year, when he returned to Patchogue to work on the Conklin family farm. In January of 1885, Conklin took a sea voyage to Savannah, Georgia on the brig Robert Dillon, commanded by Captain Eugene Hawkins. Upon his return to Patchogue he founded a stationery store on South Ocean Avenue, where he would remain in business until his final illness. In January, 1888 Conklin married Lizzie F. Newins of Patchogue. The couple had two children, Howard S. Conklin, Jr. and Hazel Elizabeth Conklin.

Mr. Conklin was very active in civic life in and around Patchogue, and served prominently in many local organizations. He was a charter member of the Union Hook and Ladder Company, a volunteer fire department, and remained a member until his death. He joined the Congregational Church in 1880, and later served as its clerk and as superintendent of its Sunday school. In 1894, Conklin helped to found the Long Island Chautauqua at Point of Woods, Fire Island and served as director and secretary of the Chautauqua Steamboat Company and the Chautauqua Hotel Company. He was a member of many fraternal organizations, including the Modern Woodmen of America, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the South Side Lodge of the Free and Accepted Masons. For seventeen years Conklin served as the director and secretary of the Patchogue Electric Company. He also served as director of the Patchogue Bank, and as director and treasurer of the Community Hospital. During the First World War he was director and local chairman for the American Red Cross. In 1920 Conklin organized the Round Table Club, and at various times served as its president, director and secretary. He was a member of the Domino Yacht Club, and during his early life he was the Patchogue correspondent of the Brooklyn Times newspaper.

Conklin died October 25, 1925 of complications following surgery at the Brooklyn Hospital.

As an amateur photographer, Mr. Conklin used his camera to document many of the activities of these organizations, as well as a wide range of daily life in Patchogue and its neighboring communities during the first two decades of the twentieth century. An avid boater and swimmer, Mr. Conklin took many pictures of seaside family outings in Patchogue, Blue Point and Fire Island.

Most of the photographs in the collection were taken in Patchogue. These include pictures of local businesses, private houses, churches, parades and other events.
