Historical/Biographical Note
The Kappel Family Digital Photographs Collection ( photographs) consists of imagery related to the Kappel Family lineage within the Sunnyside Gardens area of Queens from 1938-1980. Irving Kappel married his wife Ruth (Klein) on Jul 15, 1933, and had two children: Stephen Kappel (5/2/37-11/13/13) and Lawrence (Larry) Kappel (5/5/45-5/21/03).
Irving Kappel was a well-known optician in the Sunnyside area of Queens, New York for many years. He owned the building at 47-02 Greenpoint Avenue, where the current “Mailbox Store” and the Bliss Street Restaurant are located. Many of the photographs that Irving took document the “typical Queens childhood” of Steve and Larry Kappel, full of sports, outdoor activities, and “boys being boys.”
Stephen Kappel went to the University of Maryland to study behavioral psychology and worked as a school guidance counselor for many years. By the early 1980s, he and his second wife Vivien moved to upstate New York where they lived until 2001. In 2001, Stephen moved back to the historic Celtic Gardens building located in Sunnyside, Queens where he resided until his death in 2013. The images taken by Stephen Kappel document the lives of his children Dana, Alison, Joanne, Stacey, and nephew Theodore.
On February 3, 1968, Stephen Kappel and Marilyn Gore were married and had two daughters, Alison and Dana Kappel shortly thereafter. By the mid-1970s, Marilyn and Stephen separated and Stephen married his second-wife, Vivien Pilson. Stephen and Vivien had a daughter, Joanne Kappel; from a previous marriage Vivien had a daughter, Stacey Pilson. The Kappel-Pilson sisters donated digital copies of their families photographs to the Queens Memory Project sometime after their father, Stephen had passed.
