Guide to the Ditmars (Ditmas) Family Real Estate Deeds and Related Documents
|
Descriptive Summary | ||
Creator | Ditmas family | |
Title | Ditmars (Ditmas) Family Real Estate Deeds and Related Documents,
Dates: | 1747-1876 | |
Abstract: | This small collection consists of only about 65 items, though the range of years covered is ca 1747 to 1876. The overwhelming majority of documents are real estate deeds or related documents. Apparently, all or virtually all of these deeds concern land in the Town of Flatlands. It is not known if they deal essentially with the same plot of land, but probably they do in one way or another refer basically to the land on which the Ditmars homestead was located. It is not known how these documents came to be assembled, though they may have been fragments of a collection which once existed, or perhaps used in title searching, or historical genealogical researching. In this latter regard, there is a possibility that these documents may have been gathered by Teunis G. Bergen, a local historian who may also have been related to the Ditmars family.
Extent: | 1 box, .5 cubic feet
Identification: | D-7 | |
Location: | The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library. |
Historical/Biographical Note

Scope and Content Note
This small collection consists of only about 65 items, though the range of years covered is ca 1747 to 1876.
The documents have been arranged chronologically as follows: 18th century, 15 items; 1818, 5 items; 1836, 6 items; 19th century, 29 items.
Among some of the names in the Ditmars family mentioned are Johannis, Margaret, Abraham and Andrew. Other names include Stephen Sohenck, Albert Van Brunt, Theodorius Van Sick1en, and Jacobus Lefferts.
Included as part of this collection are about half a dozen miscellaneous documents dated principally in the 19th century, all in one way or another concerned with the town of Flatlands (the one 18th century document may not). Evidently, these were collected by Mr. Ditmars. At any rate, a sheet listing these documents (as well as one or two other documents not found) and included among them bore the inscription "Papers owned by C. A. Ditmas".
