Historical/Biographical Note
The Exempt Firemen's Association of Flushing was one of at least eight such associations which still existed in various communities of Queens County during the 1930’s and possibly up through the 1950’s. These associations consisted of volunteer firemen who had served their communities in the eras before regular paid city operated departments came into existence. The Flushing Association was organized and incorporated in 1897. According to its by-laws (a copy of the laws revised in 1934 is found in this collection), the Association was composed “of persons of good and moral character who have been honorably discharged from the Volunteer Fire Department or who shall have served the required time prescribed by law in New York State". Further, the object of the Association was listed as being "to promote {and renew) old time friendship (and) to visit and provide for the relief of its distressed members". In essence then, the Associations were composed of retired volunteers. These retired men were usually referred to as Veterans. The word "Exempt" usually used synonymously with "Veteran" and was probably used to indicate the fact that volunteer firemen (active as well as veteran) were "exempt from jury and military duty, and (enjoyed) protection in civil service posts,” Long Island Daily Press, August 5, 1939.

The check books measure approximately 7x8 ¼. The receipt book is 8 ½ x 3 ½.
The few miscellaneous items consist of what appears to be membership cards apparently listing hours when some firemen were available for some kind of duty. There are about 30 such cards arranged according to three engine company numbers (272, 273 and 274). Also included among these miscellaneous items is a printed copy of the Association’s by-laws, (1934); a small unused Dues Book for use by the Ladies Auxiliary; a few letters dated in 1921 regarding the adoption by the Association of a little girl "War Orphan" in France; some blank membership dues forms probably printed in the early 1950’s.
This collection measures less than of a cubic foot and consists of approximately 125 items.
