Historical/Biographical Note
This collection measuring about one foot consists or unbound genealogical notes written and arranged by William Applebie Eardeley (1870-1935) a native of Brooklyn, and a genealogist of note. His focus was Long Island genealogy and was noted for making transcripts of various vital records, as well as writing brief histories of a few communities. Some of his work was never published in the sense that it was printed, but rather typescripts exist only. He is well-represented in the card catalog of the Archives at Queens Library.

Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of perhaps several thousand manuscript sheets of notes, measuring by and large 5 ½ x 8 ½, strictly genealogical in nature -birth dates, death dates, etc. References to page numbers are found on some of the sheets, and perhaps this may indicate that said notes were to be used in a genealogical work{s) Eardeley may have been contemplating. The following families are covered by these notes: Bedell, Carman, Conklin, Cornell, Davis, DeMott, Foulke, Hewlett (empty), Hicks, Hulse, Hendrickson, Lamberson, Langdon, Miller, Osman, Pettit, Remsen, Rhodes, Roe, Sourthard, Thorne, Tuthill, Weeks-Wicks, Wiltsie.
Some families contain a relatively large number of notes, others but a few. In one instance, an envelope existed for the name in question, but there were no notes in it whatsoever. The covers of the original envelopes have been mounted and filed with the notes since some of them contained some kind of writing on them, and perhaps may provide some clue.
It would appear though that at some time in the late or early 1940’s, the Archives at Queens Library perhaps tried to work on the notes or prepare some typescripts, and that the notes were not placed in the envelopes by Eardeley but rather arranged by some Archives at Queens Library staff members. Probably, Eardeley himself researched and wrote most of these notes ca. the 1920’s.
In addition to the above, the collection also consists of a dozen manuscript soft bound note books (ca. 7x8 ¼ with one smaller one only ca. 7x4). Most are rather full volumes, but rather difficult to decipher since they all appear to be very rough notes. Most of the books appear to be devoted to listing tombstone inscriptions.
