Historical/Biographical Note

Robert C. Friedrich was a local Queens’ historian who mainly focused on College Point. He was an employee of the Queens Borough Public Library in the late 1960’s. Born and raised in College Point, Mr. Friedrich devoted his life to discovering and writing College Point history. Mr. Friedrich was also interested in the history of various windmills domestically and internationally. Mr. Friedrich served as the president of the Poppenhusen Institute in the 1960’s. As president Mr. Friedrich helped in the creation of exhibits that highlighted Popenhusen’s vast history. This collection contains many of Mr. Friedrich’s notes pertaining to these subjects.

Scope and Content Note

The Robert C. Friedrich (5 boxes, 1939-2005) highlight Mr. Friedrich’s research into various subject matters that interested him through the years. The collection consists of ten series.

Antiques, Art, and Architecture (10 folders, 1939-2002) contain flyers, clippings, and advertisements on different antique and architectural styles. The series also includes articles of specific artists and particular styles of antiques. There is also a folder European architectural style and structure.

Ceramics (1 folder, 1992) has information on different companies that work in Ceramics. The businesses are located in Queens and Long Island.

Community Information (11 folders, 1960-2005) consists of background information on specific towns and neighborhoods in Queens. The areas of Queens covered are Flushing and Bayside with an emphasis on these areas during Colonial times. There is also a folder for communities in Long Island with a listing of the different literary sources that Mr. Friedrich used for his research.

Glass (10 folders, 1869; 1888; 1895; 1900-1999) contains information on the different companies within Queens and Long Island that manufacture and produce glass. There are also listings for Brooklyn companies with ads and directory listings. The glass is also studied for its design and Art patterns.

Historic Houses (6 folders, 1842; 1916; 1924; 1969; 1991) studies the design and structure of different buildings in Queens and Long Island. Special emphasis is placed on Spring Hill estate and the Stone houses in Queens County. Spring Hill was the residence of Cadwaller Colden a former minister and physician that was one of the most prominent men in Colonial New York. Stone Houses were stone structures located in Queens such as “Hallet’s Cove” in Astoria and “Bodine Castle” in Ravenswood.

The Maps series (1 folder, No Date) contains various maps from different regions of the world with emphasis on California, Canada, and the West Indies. Most of these areas are where the windmills that Mr. Friedrich was researching are located.

The Notes series (5 folders, 1970’s) contains the various papers Mr. Friedrich used while doing his research on historic homes, windmills, and communities.

Photographs (2 boxes, 1831-1963) contain pictures, drawings, and sketches of the different subjects that Mr. Friedrich researched. There are postcards of windmills around the world and sketches of building and antique design. Some of these postcards are already located in the Archives’ Image Database. (These images can be located in the Archives “Prints” collection box numbers 152 and 153).

Pottery (4 folders, 1842-1899; 1981) contains the listing of Pottery makers and manufacturers in Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk counties.

The series Windmills (30 folders, 1923; 1953; 1969; 1974-1979; 2000) is the largest series in the collection. Mr. Friedrich spent a lot of time researching windmills both domestically and internationally. The series consists of postcards, news articles, and information about windmills and the benefits of wind power. The series is separated into two subseries:

Windmills International (4 folders, 1974-1978) is a sub-series that focuses on windmills in areas such as Canada, the Caribbean, and Europe. This sub-series consists of articles about the specific windmills with articles that also speak on the islands and areas that the windmills are located.

United States Windmills (11 folders, 1941-1978) is a sub-series that deals with windmills in the United States. This sub-series contains newspaper articles and focuses on windmills in such places as San Francisco, Wisconsin, and Virginia.

The Windmills series also contains three books on the subject of windmills and a scrapbook of different articles and windmill sketches. There are several photographs on the subject of windmills located in the photograph series of the collection.

Robert C. Friedrich donated these papers to the Queens Library Archives.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
