Historical/Biographical Note

Anders Goldfarb is a photographer who lives and works in Brooklyn. He served as an adjunct professor of photography at Dowling College in Oakdale, New York, and as a photography instructor at the State University of New York in New Paltz. He has also taught at the Cooper Union and the New School in New York City. His work has been shown at galleries throughout New York City and the United States, and also in England and Mexico. His photographs have been featured in the books The Brooklyn Century (2001, Brooklyn Borough President’s Office) and The Eighties (1992, Vincent Virga), as well as in New York Newsday, the New York Post, American Photographer, Popular Photography, New York Magazine and Time Out New York.

Mr. Goldfarb is primarily a documentary photographer. The major aims of his work are to record everyday life in neighborhoods in New York City, particularly in Brooklyn and Queens, and to document the ways these neighborhoods have changed over time. The earliest images in the collection were taken in Flushing, where Mr. Goldfarb grew up. As a young adult in the late Seventies and early Eighties, Mr. Goldfarb began photographing Coney Island; this led to similar projects in other changing neighborhoods, such as Greenpoint and Williamsburg. Most recently, Mr. Goldfarb has been hired by the Archives at Queens Library to produce photographic records of Long Island City and Jamaica.

As Mr. Goldfarb is still alive and working we expect to make further additions to this collection in the future.

Scope and Content Note

The Anders Goldfarb Photographic Collection (1975-2003, 2 boxes, 1.5 cubic feet) contains approximately 850 photographs documenting some thirty years of life in neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. Included are pictures of people, buildings, and events.

The collection consists of two sub-groups; Prints and Negatives, and Slides and Transparencies. The sub-group Prints and Negatives (2 boxes, 1977-2003) contains seven series of prints (see inventory), each documenting a particular neighborhood or community. They have been grouped together by community, in chronological order and numbered sequentially. The Archives at Queens Library also owns negatives for two of these series, which have been stored in the binder with the slides and transparencies. The sub-group Slides and Transparencies (1 binder, 1975-2003) has been arranged according to the community being documented. At a future date, all of the images in the collection will be accessible through the Archives at Queens Library’s online image database.

The series Brooklyn-Coney Island, Prints (1977-1984, AG1-127) includes images of many buildings and structures which have since been demolished, such as Stauch’s Baths, and the Thunderbolt Rollercoaster. The Brooklyn-Greenpoint, Prints (AG128-236) series documents the changes in a neighborhood undergoing rapid gentrification.

The collection is organized chronologically, in order to document the lives of both the creator and his subjects. As Mr. Goldfarb is still alive and working we expect to make further additions to this collection in the future.
