Historical/Biographical Note
Samuel H. Gottscho (1875-1971) was an American architectural, landscape and nature photographer. A native of Brooklyn, Mr. Gottscho acquired his first camera at the age of twenty one, and made his first photograph at Coney Island, but it was not until he was fifty years old that he took up photography as a profession. In 1935, Gottscho’s son-in-law William Schleisner joined him in the photography business. The Gottscho-Schleisner Company’s studio was located at 150-35 86th Avenue in Jamaica, Queens.
During his lifetime, Gottscho’s photographs appeared in American Architect and Architecture, Architectural Record and the New York Times. He also contributed articles on nature to the Times, and in 1967 he received the New York Botanic Garden’s Distinguished Service Medal. Mr. Gottscho died in Jamaica at the age of ninety five.
The largest archive of Mr. Gottscho’s work, consisting of 40,000 photographs, can be found at the Museum of the City of New York. The Library of Congress and Columbia University also own large collections of Gottscho photographs.
