Historical/Biographical Note

The contents of the Broad Channel Historical Society Collection are all contained on five rolls of microfilm. The collection consists of donations from people within the Broad Channel community. There are several series within the collection that covers news clippings, documents, and photographs. The items were microfilmed in chronological order by year so a person could have donated all of their material at the same time but the material was arranged to fit the year range denoted for each reel.

Correspondence contains letters between various families and Broad Channel residents. A number of people who donated materials to the Broad Channel Historical Society also donated letters from people in their family that give an idea on what life was like in Broad Channel over the years. The letters are placed within each reel within the display of a particular families’ donation. They are not together on a reel on even within the same frames of a reel.

News Clippings make up the largest portions of the microfilm. The News clippings include stories on Broad Channel history or events that took place in the area. A lot of coverage is focused on the struggle of acquiring five year leases from the city of New York as well as the protest over residents being allowed to purchase the properties that they have lived on for years. The fifth microfilm reel in the collection consists almost exclusively of newspaper clippings.

Photographs are copied unto every single reel and highlight various places and times in Broad Channel history. Prominent locations such as St. Virgilius’ Church, Moran’s Hotel, the Broad Channel volunteer firemen’s firehouse, and the Bathing Park are all represented in the images displayed. The images also span various decades allowing viewers to see the progress of various businesses and homes.

When specified, names of the donating families and individuals are indicated within the collection inventory.
