Abstract: The material was donated to the Queens Library Archives by Jeffrey Saunders. Mr. Saunders was a member of both the Jackson Heights Beautification Group and Jackson Heights Garden City Society.

Historical/Biographical Note

The area now known as Jackson Heights was mainly farmland in the 1800s. The area was known as Trains Meadow and was a part of the Newtown section of Queens. The Queens Realty Company, headed by Edward A. MacDougal, began the purchasing of land from as early as 1910 and had acquired 350 acres by 1914. Taking inspiration from the Letchworth Garden City in England, the corporation went about planning and designing the new community for the middle and upper class residents of Manhattan as a communal place to raise a family. Jackson Heights would become the first “Garden Apartment” community in the United States.

Garden Apartment buildings had ample sunlight, gardens, sitting areas, and walkways. The surrounding area had churches, playgrounds, golf and tennis courses, and a community clubhouse. Zoning laws kept the buildings to six stories. Buildings were set back from the street to make room for landscaping. Some of the early buildings were the Chateau, Cambridge Court, and the Towers. The Queensboro Realty Company introduced Cooperative Apartment buildings in the 1920’s. The construction of Roosevelt Avenue, to accommodate an extension of the Interborough Rapid Transit line, brought more people to the Jackson Heights neighborhood. The opening of the independent subway, opened in 1933, brought about another wave of population growth. From 1929 to 1939 the Jackson Heights population went from 6,000 to 75,000.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s many early Eastern European residents moved to the suburbs. Jackson Heights became a landing spot for many various immigrants. Jackson Heights became known as a cultural melting pot. The diverse ethnicities could be seen in the variety of restaurants and stores that catered to the Jackson Heights population. Asian-Indian movie houses, Latin America music stores, and bakeries are some of the businesses.

Concerned about the safety and beauty of the Jackson Heights community the Jackson Heights Beautification Group was founded in the late 1980, by local residents. The neighborhood had seen an increase in crime during the 1980’s. The murder of journalist Manuel de Dios Unanue, in a local restaurant, made many in the Jackson Heights community feel as if the neighborhood was gaining a bad reputation. Jeffrey Saunders, a Jackson Heights resident, was a member of the Jackson Height Beautification Group. Determined to change the bad course they felt Jackson Heights was on the group was created with the goal “to preserve, restore, revitalize, and maintain an improved community environment by encouraging community support and stimulating community action”.

Studying the unique history of the Jackson Heights neighborhood and wanting to slow the course of sub-standard building construction and business awnings, the Jackson Heights Beautification Group became driven to gain landmark status for the community. A Historic District was determined in a 36 block residential center of the neighborhood. The work of Mr. Saunders and the Jackson Heights Beautification Group played a major role in acquiring that designation.

Mr. Saunders and his organization researched the history of the community to find out the significant events and people that made land marking relevant. They also educated the community on the significance of land marking and acquired the names on petitions.

The Jackson Heights Garden City Society was created in 1997. The organization was founded by Adrienne Sumowicz, Ralph Rivera, Dr.Stanley Cogan, and Jeffrey Saunders. The organization was created to shift liability for certain projects away from the Jackson Heights Beautification Group. There would be more of an emphasis on the historical aspects of the Jackson Heights Community. The main project of the group was the creation of the Jackson Heights Garden City Trail.

Jeffrey Saunders had plans to write a book entitled “Connecting the Centuries: Jackson Heights Garden City, America’s First Planned Garden City”. Mr. Saunders’ research for both the book and getting landmark status for Jackson Heights was donated to the Queens Library Archives in 2013.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Long Island Division Monday through Friday 10am through 5pm. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
