Historical/Biographical Note

Lack of biographical data concerning the above family makes it difficult, in some cases at least, to divide the papers in an absolute manner. It is known, however, from an examination of certain documents within the collection as well as from death notices in the "Long Island Democrat" that Elizabeth Hagner, wife of Henry Hagner, Jr., died on Oct 5, 1844 at the age of 65; and that her daughter Phebe Hagner passed away at the age of 91 on Dec 17, 1888. Their residences were both given as Union Hall Street in Jamaica.

Henry Hagner was probably born ca. 1770 and probably died sometime between June 1808 and Apr 1809. There seems to be some discrepancy since Elizabeth Hagner, according to a document on file herein, was named estate administrator in July 1808, though another document, a bill also herein, is dated Apr 1809 and addressed to Hagner. It would appear, however, that the former date is really the correct one, that is, he probably died sometime immediately before July 1808.

He was a general merchant in Herricks, and his business papers list such items for sale as sugar, soap, molasses, rum, thread, salt, tobacco, and butter. As far as it known, the business ceased to exist after his death. It is not known when Mrs. Hagner and her daughter moved to Jamaica, but it probably was around 1838, and it is also possible that they may have lived in the village of Brooklyn for a while.

Henry Hagner, Jr. may have been associated in business with his father, who probably preceded him in death around Dec 1805 and who bore the same name (a receipt dated May 3, 1806 is one document which bears this out). There is some confusion with the use of the term “Jr.” on some of the documents, though it would appear that whether the term is used or not, that practically all of the items are addressed to one individual, Henry Hagner, Jr. and not to the father, Henry Hagner. It is also fair to assume that Mr. Hagner may have dropped the term "Jr.” after his father died. However it may be, we have considered all Henry Hagner papers, as those of Henry Hagner, Jr.

Scope and Content Note

The business papers of Henry Hagner, Jr. consist largely of receipts and receipted bills. Most of the bills were submitted by suppliers of merchandise headquartered in New York (Manhattan). Also included as part of these papers are some 20 or so real estate indentures on similar land documents referring principally to land in Herricks. Names found on these deeds included Townsend, Schenck, Hendrickson and Williams, among others. All of these documents have been grouped as follows: 1793, 1796, 1800-1804, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1808-1809 and undated, but probably same dates as above. In the 1805 documents is found a copy of Hagner’s Will as is a loosely bound daybook.

The two bound volumes in this collection also fall within this sub-group, and these consist of an account book (ledger) and a daybook. The latter is a chronological arrangement of financial transactions, while the account book is arranged by name of individuals, a name index being provided. Both volumes complement each other, and cover the period ca. May 1805-Aug 1808. Several loose documents were inserted in both volumes (especially the account book) and these have been removed and placed in envelopes. Pages towards the back of both volumes have been ripped out, and both were never fully utilized, many pages being blank.

The personal papers of Elizabeth Hagner cover the period from her husband’s death, at which time she was named administrator of his estate, up to the time of her death. Though by and large they consist of receipts and receipted bills (for various goods purchased, medical bills, school bills for her daughter Phebe, etc.), there are a few other documents as well, such as an agreement with a mason to "furnish materials for a house proposed to be erected... in Union Hall St. …"; an insurance policy; and an undated sketch of a piece of property. The documents have been been arranged in chronological order. Inventories of the estate of Henry Hagner are found in the 1807-1810 documents.

About the same in quantity as those of her mother, the Phebe Hagner personal papers cover the range from the decade preceding her mother's death up till the decade which witnessed her death. Again, they consist by and large of receipts or receipted bills for various services rendered or materials supplied. There are many receipts dated in the 1850s for insurance payments, and there are two or three tax bills dated in the 1870s from the village and town of Jamaica. These documents are arranged in chronological order.
