Descriptive Summary

Creator Horton family
Title Horton Family of Southold Miscellaneous Papers,
Dates: 1828-1865
Abstract: There are only some 55 documents, in this small collection though they are dated ca. 1828-1854. These consist of such types as wills, receipts, bonds, and related items. Evidently, the earlier dated documents resulted primarily from the administration of the estate of Jonathan Horton (died ca. 1828-1831) by his sons Jonathan G. Horton and Renessalear Horton. Their mother, Mary Horton, is also mentioned on several documents, as are some other family members. The later dated documents evidently deal primarily with the administration of the estate of James M. Horton who probably died late 1859 or early 1860. Other than this aspect, that is, estate administration, there does not appear to be any one theme running through the papers.
Extent: 1 box, .2 cubic feet
Identification: H-6
Location: The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library.

Historical/Biographical Note

No biographical information concerning the family has been located, though they are probably listed in such genealogical works as THE HORTONS IN AMERICA (pub 1929) and THE HORTON GENEALOGY (pub 1876).

Scope and Content Note

There are only some 55 documents, in this small collection though they are dated ca. 1828-1854. These consist of such types as wills, receipts, bonds, and related items. Evidently, the earlier dated documents resulted primarily from the administration of the estate of Jonathan Horton (died 1830) by his sons Jonathan G. Horton and Renessalear Horton. Their mother, Mary Horton (died 1858), is also mentioned on several documents, as are some other family members. The later dated documents evidently deal primarily with the administration of the estate of James M. Horton who died in 1858. Other than this aspect, that is, estate administration, there does not appear to be any one theme running through the papers.

All documents are filed in chronological order starting with 1828 and then by decades for the 1830s, the 1840s, the 1850s, the 1860s, and undated. The decade of the 1830s account for about half of the documents in the collections
