Scope and Content Note
The collection (consisting of some 80 documents) is composed almost exclusively of receipted bills, these being dated from 1875-1897 (the latter items were those of Mrs. Hewins). With but a few exceptions, all bills were those submitted by the Town of Newtown for taxing purposes, Of these, the overwhelming majority were those submitted by School District No. 5, specifically for school taxes.
Besides the above, the collection also contains about a dozen miscellaneous documents such as, real estate deeds; insurance policies; certificates of sales of land for non-payment of taxes; and a permit issued to Hewins permitting him to lead "his three cows" to pasture. These also are dated in the same decades as the other documents. Another document evidently was added to the papers in 1921 when a tax search was made on some property once belonging to Mr. Hewins. Said search was made for an Edward W. Cox.
