During this period Mr. Ackerman became a member of various community organizations and associations. Mr. Ackerman served as the director of the Queens Child Guidance Center and worked hard to keep the Pomonok Community Center open. In 1978 Gary Ackerman ran for State senator of the 12th district and was elected. In 1983 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He has served in that role for 29 years.
