Historical/Biographical Note
No biographical information concerning Stacy Hepburn has been located. Judging from the documents in this very small collection (only 10 items), Hepburn was a merchant probably dealing with port wine. Since most letters are dated from Philadelphia, he was either a native or resident of the area.

Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of seven letters and three other documents. The letters are dated Dec 12,1784, Aug 9, 1785, Aug 20, 1785, Aug 27, 1785, Feb 21, 1786, Jun 1, 1790 and Jul 5, 1790. They are all written by Hepburn to the New York firm of Messrs Stewart and Jones, merchants. Most make some brief mention of a Mr. Low, no doubt another merchant (several merchants by the name Low are listed in the work, OLD MERCHANTS OF NEW YORK CITY, by J.A. Scoville).
Only one of the other three miscellaneous documents appears to relate to Hepburn, at least directly. It is an agreement, dated May 8, 1784 between Hepburn and Zebulon Doty of Long Island, owner of a schooner. Agreement involves sale of the schooner. As part of the same document, there is a receipt involving a transaction between Doty and the Stewart and Jones firm.
Of the other two, only one is dated in the same approximate time period as the rest of the items, and that is a bill dated Nov 30, 1786 of Nicholas Cruger to Stewart and Jones. The other document is a financial order or note to pay Thomas Holmes. It is dated Nov 26, 1803 and signed by Jones, Son and Clinch, perhaps a successor to the firm of Stewart and Jones.
