Descriptive Summary

Creator Helme family
Title Helme Family Miscellaneous Documents,
Dates: 1710-1880
Abstract: This collection consists of approximately 100 documents of which about 35 are real estate deeds. When such documents as quit-claims or others referring to land transactions are included, it can be said that half of the collection consists of documents referring to land. These deal with real estate in the Town of Brookhaven, especially in the area of Miller Place, and involve various members of the Helme Family of said town.
Extent: 1 microfilm reel
Identification: H-9
Location: The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library.

Historical/Biographical Note

Essentially they can be described as being Personal Papers of the Family covering several generations. However, because the collection is such a small one, only brief insights are afforded into the life of any one individual in the family. A brief genealogical sketch of the family is found in studies of other related families such as, for example, the volume, ONE BRANCH OF THE MINER FAMILY, by Lillian Selleck pub in 1928.

Besides the name of Helme, other names found on some documents include Woodhull, Strong, and Davis, many of these families being related to the Helmes through marriage.

The collection has been divided into the following series: Real Estate Indentures, 17th century, Real Estate Indentures, 18th century, Real Estate Indentures, 19th century, Quit-Claims, Land Descriptions Land Agreements, Land Papers, Miscellaneous, Bonds, Wills and Inventories, Bills or Receipts, Letters, Military Documents, Miscellaneous Documents.

Military Documents are dated 1787, 1809, 1812, 1814, and 1841 and pertain to William Helme, Samuel Woodhull. John Foster, and George P. Helme. About half of the letters are addressed to William H. Helme and are dated mainly in the 1820s. The bills and receipts are also dated mainly in the 1820s though one is dated as early as 1744. Included in this letter category is an order for some goods.

Included among the miscellaneous documents is a Bill of Sale involving ownership by George P. Helme of one/sixteenth of the schooner "Willow Harp". This document is dated 1880.

The documents were filmed in the order described on the preceding page, dockets usually filmed first, followed by body of document.
