Scope and Content Note

This small collection consists of fourteen documents, twelve of which are letters (one evidently has a page missing), while the other two are receipted bills. The bills are 1812, one involving Hicks, the other apparently third parties.

The letters are dated 1795, 1796, 1801, 1809, 1814, 1816, 1817 (the fragmentary one), and 1818.

All letters have the conjugate address leaves (that is, there were and are more envelopes) and are addressed to Messrs. Alsop and Hicks, while the one dated 1796 is to Messrs. Charles Doughty and Sons. Though most letters are from New York, a few are from such cities as London and Dunkirk. All apparently deal with business matters of one kind o another with the possible exception of the fragmentary letter which refers very briefly to a Quaker Quarterly meeting. Some letters are addressed to New York, some to Westbury. It is not known exactly what business Mr. Hicks was engaged in, but probably he was what was known as a commission agent, one who dealt with various kinds of merchandise of the day, probably as a kind of middle man.
