Historical/Biographical Note

The Jamaica Club was incorporated under the laws of New York State on May 20, 1891. The club’s headquarters at this time were at the corners of Herriman Avenue and Grove Streets (present day 161st Street and 90th Avenue). According to the preamble of the Bylaws, The Jamaica Club was the "successor in interest of the Jamaica Rod and Rifle Association; was incorporated by its direction, and will ever cherish the memories and traditions connected with the parent organization." It is not known if the parent organization existed up to 1891, or whether it had disbanded sometime earlier.

The Jamaica Rod and Rifle Association was formed at a meeting held on March 8, 1875 by the following gentlemen: G.H. Creed; Theodore Rogers; E.H. Nostrand; William Durland, Jr.; A.J. Wilkinson; William S. Elmendorf. The meeting was held in the home of Mr. Creed and according to the minutes of this meeting, the gentlemen met in order “to form a club for the better protection of game and for sporting purposes”. At a meeting held on March 22, 1875 the official name, that is, the Jamaica Rod and Rifle Association was adopted. At this same meeting the officers were chosen. These were the following: G.H. Creed, president; John Fleming, vice president; William S. Elmendorf, secretary; George Damon, treasurer. The Jamaica Club probably disbanded sometime in the 1920s.

Scope and Content Note

This very small collection consists only of 4 bound volumes of minutes, and several loose miscellaneous papers as follows:

One volume of Minutes of Meetings held by the Jamaica Rod and Rifle Association for the period of March 8, 1875 to April 13, 1885.

Two volumes of Meetings held by the Board of Managers of the Jamaica Club for the period of May 26, 1891 to April 11, 1910, and June 13, 1910 to December 13, 1920. Though these two volumes are minutes of the Board of Managers, both contain several pages at the back which contain minutes of "Special” or “Annual” general membership meetings. These latter minutes cover period of 1894 to 1909, and 1910 to 1920. Treasurer accounts are part of the make-up of some of these latter minutes.

One volume of Minutes of Meetings held by the Club’s House Committee. This House Committee was formed at a meeting held by the Board of Managers on July 13, 1892. As the name implies, the duties of this Committee were to maintain and care for the Club’s headquarters. These minutes are for the period of July 19, 1892 to May 10, 1894 and October 1, 1909 to December 11, 1909.

Miscellaneous Loose Papers (about 10 items) such as a letter from the Supt. of the Excelsior Dime Museum Association of New York, dated April 10, 1886 in which a number of wax figures owned by the museum and of possible interest to the Club are described; 3 brief estimates submitted by painting contractors in 1909; several annual reports submitted by the Secretary-Treasurer, ca. 1884-1891.
