Abstract: The Jessup Family Papers (7 folders, 1710-1891) focus on John S. Jessup a third generation member of the Jessup family that originated in Yorkshire, England. The family settled in Stamford, Connecticut as early as 1630. John S. Jessup settled in the area of Long Island known as Westhampton, N.Y. in the early 1800’s. Mr. Jessup’s documents highlight land deals and correspondence between him and other family members until his death in 1878.

Historical/Biographical Note

The Jessup family has origins from Yorkshire, England and settled in Stamford, Connecticut from as early as 1630. Mr. John S. Jessup was the son of Matthew Jessup whose forefathers had originated from England. His mother died in his infancy. She was a descendant of the Schelhinger family who had Dutch origins. Being a prominent member of the Westhampton society Mr. Jessup was written up in the Watchman newspaper with a brief biography on his family and his accomplishments as a member of the church.

Isaac Jessup was born on August 4, 1827 and resided in Brooklyn.

W.F. Jessup was a member of the Jessup family that had a farm wagons and machinery business, located in Westhampton Beach, N.Y.

Scope and Content Note

The Jessup Family Papers (7 folders, 1710-1891) consist of five series related to the Jessup family of Long Island, NY. The five series include documents created by John S. Jessup, W.F. Jessup, and Isaac M. Jessup. The collection contains correspondence, wills, deeds, the Southampton Highway supervisor, and genealogies of the Jessup, Schelhinger, and Albertson families. Two of the series contain sub series.

The first series Isaac Jessup (1 folder, 1725) contains a copy of a Land deed from the year 1725 by Isaac and Henry Jessup.

The second series Isaac M. Jessup (1 folder, 1872-1891) contains documents of genealogical research done by Isaac M. Jessup. Mr. Jessup did research on the Long Island side of the Jessup family with a listing of names of past relatives with dates of birth. Included in this folder is information about the names of Jessup family ancestors from the Shellinger and Albertson families of 1600’s Europe. There is also an obituary for John S. Jessup who died in 1878 with a write up and brief biography in the Watchman newspaper. There is also an article written by Henry G. Jessup from Dartmouth College on the origins of the Jessup family name.

The third series Wills and Inventory (1 folder, 1831-1878) contains the wills of Henry and Thomas Jessup showing how property was passed down to John S. Jessup from past generations. After the death of John S. Jessup an inventory was created in July 1878 and is included in this folder.

The fourth series John S. Jessup Papers (3 folders, 1857-1866) contains three sub series. Correspondence to daughter Sarah (1 folder, 1857-1865), Real Estate and Tax Records (1 folder, 1835 – 1855), and Southampton Highway Supervisor records. The sub series Real Estate and Tax Records (1 folder, 1835-1855) contain Mr. Jessup’s property tax payments and land transaction documents. The sub series Southampton Town Highway Supervisor Records (1 folder, 1850-1862) documents a land dispute between John B. Jessup and the town of Southampton over a highway that was obstructed by a fence on Mr. Jessup’s property

The series W.F. Jessup contains Business cards from the 1920’s.

The Archives at Queens Library does not know the papers provenance.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
