Historical/Biographical Note
The Johnson Family Papers (1 folder, 1922) consists of the genealogy of the Johnson Family of Queens New York. The family originated in Italy and migrated to France as early as 1505. The family consists of Rapelyes from the children of Victor Antonie Janssen. William Rapelye was the first member of the family to migrate to the United States. William Rapelye’s brother Joris/George Janssen de Rapelye founded Brooklyn in 1631. Joris/George’s daughter Sarah was the first white child born on Long Island on June 9, 1625. Antonie Janssen Van Salers founded Gravesend in 1631. Extended Family members took residence in other parts of Long Island such as Oyster Bay. Family member Barent Johnson participated in the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Long Island and died from a wound in the hip.
John Oscar Johnson was married to Freda Johnson and wrote his last will and testament witnessed on October 9, 1922.

Access Restrictions
Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
