Historical/Biographical Note
Archibald King was the great grandson of a famous early 19th century Long Island Presbyterian clergyman, the Rev. Ezra King, Mr. Archibald King (1880-1955) lived for the most part in Jamaica, more specifically at 175-28 89th Avenue. Though by trade a builder, and a real estate attorney, the love of his life was Nature as exhibited in the flora and fauna of many areas, but specifically Long Island. This he sought to investigate by the judicious use of the camera, and thus took many exploratory trips into the countryside of the 1920s and 1930s.
Using an old box camera on a tripod, and a black cloth with which to cover his head, he spent many hours with his hobby. Because color film had still to be invented, all the pictures he took were in black and white. However, seeking always to capture realism, he hand tinted his pictures with water colors, thus doing his best to preserve the scenes he took as they actually were.
