Abstract: The Joan Kindler Photographs of Postcards Collection (57 prints, 1905-1912, 1925) contains photographs highlighting the people and places of Flushing and Whitestone, New York. The main focus is on street scenes, churches, and homes in the two areas. Subjects include St. Joseph’s Home for Girls at Flushing; the LIRR Whitestone station , Grace Episcopal Church, and the Columbia Club in Whitestone. Most of the photographs are taken from postcard prints.

Historical/Biographical Note

Joan Kindler, born in 1929, is a resident of Whitestone, New York, with an interest in the history of Whitestone and Beechhurst. At the time of this finding aid Ms. Kindler works as the Flushing Freedom Mile Committee, Chair for the Queens Historical Society. Ms. Kindler is also on the organization’s Advisory Board. She is also the administrator for the Flushing (Quaker) Meeting House located in Flushing, Queens.

Scope and Content Note

The Joan Kindler Photographs of Postcards Collection (57 photographs, 1905-1912, 1925) contains photographs highlighting the people and places of Flushing and Whitestone New York.

The main focus is on street scenes, churches, and homes in the two areas. Subjects include St. Joseph’s Home for Girls at Flushing, the LIRR Whitestone station, Grace Episcopal Church, and the Columbia Club in Whitestone. She purchased postcards of Whitestone and Beechhurst from the early 1900 and made photographic reproductions of the images. She donated the images to the Archives at Queens Public Library.

The Queens Borough Public Library photographed Ms. Kindler’s postcards for this collection.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
