Scope and Content Note

The August Kruzensk Photographs document the construction of the statuary that surrounds the great clock above the 42nd Street entrance to Manhattan’s Grand Central Station. The statues, depicting the mythological figures Mercury, Hercules and Minerva, were designed by the French sculptor Jules Coutan. They were carved and assembled at the William Bradley and Sons Stone Yard, located on the west side of Vernon Avenue south of Noble Street (present-day 40th Avenue) in Long Island City, Queens. Mr. Kruzensk, an employee of the stone yard, photographed each of the three figures in various stages of completion, as well as the finished group. Also included with the collection are views of the stone yard itself, and of Mr. Kruzensk’s fellow stoneworkers. When the finished statuary was unveiled in the summer of 1914, it was said to be the largest sculptural group in the world.
