Historical/Biographical Note
The Society was founded in Flushing in the year, 1866. The purpose of the organization, according to an undated copy of the Society’s Constitution was "to furnish sewing to the needy women of Flushing, who may be duly recommended. According to a brief historical sketch which a one time member of the organization wrote, the material to supply the workers was procured from orphan homes, hospitals etc., far and near, and hundreds of thousands of garments were returned to the senders, every article a satisfactory piece of work - nothing else was allowed to pass the Committee. The funds were furnished by the public, the churches each made a yearly offering and some legacies helped." The Society was disbanded on January 12, 1923.

Scope and Content Note
The Ladies Employment Society Records is a very small group consisting only of some 6 volumes and a few miscellaneous items such as newspaper clippings. Four volumes contain minutes of meetings.
Minutes of Meetings There are volumes of minutes, 1884-1923, are for meetings which were usually held on a monthly basis. Minutes for some annual meetings are also included. By and large, each meeting has only some 2 or 3 pages of minutes. Interspersed throughout some of the volumes are pages devoted to a "List of Managers; List of Officers; etc. Also found occasionally is a listing of members arranged by church affiliation. These lists were evidently used for dues check-off. The very last meeting of the Society took place on Jan. 12, 1923 at which time it was ordered that "Conditions have changed and other societies having been formed following our line of work it is moved and seconded that the Ladies Employment Society of Flushing disband”.
Record of Clothing Articles Sewn In this volume, 1866-1869, 1877, was maintained an exact itemized listing of the kinds of garments which were sewn by ladies. Columns are labeled as follows: Given (Date); Permit; Seamstress; Garments; Price; Returned. A typical entry would read as follows: “¼; Mrs. Mellin; Mrs. Burns; 2 Bib Aprons; .75¢ 1/11.”
Account Book This volume, 1866-1874, maintained by the Society's treasurer, was, apparently, a general-entry volume, that Is, various kinds of accounts were listed. However, it is not a very voluminous book, and it is not always easy to determine what type of activities, specific activities refer.
Miscellaneous The Society's Constitution, printed in small leaflet form and undated; several newspaper clippings refer ring the Society, dated ca. 1910-1914; a 600-700 word typewritten sketch of the Society's history dated April 1923 and written by Miss Anna Breath, a former officer of the Society.

Provenance
These records are very fragmentary in nature. At one time they may have belonged to the Flushing Historical Society. It is not possible, however, to determine this with any degree of accuracy.
Access Restrictions
Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
