Historical/Biographical Note

The Marion Press was established in 1896 and continued until Mr. Hopkins’ death. Its history is re counted in an almost 300 page volume titled THE MARION PRESS A SURVEY AND A CHECK-LIST. The book, published in 1943 by the Queens Borough Public Library, was written by Mr. Hopkins’ son-in-law, Thomas A. Larremore, and Hopkins’ daughter, Amy Hopkins Larremore. Another volume published in 1936 titled THE DEVINNE and MARION PRESSES, A CHAPTER PROM THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF FRANK E. HOPKINS provided some more background information.

Scope and Content Note

Marion Press -Proof Sheets, these are actually printed sheets in the form of a book. There are various notations in the sheets and underlining of various words. Accompanying this are a few extraneous items. These are mainly photographs or photostats of the covers of several "books published by the Marion Press, or specifically by Hopkins. There is also two photographs of a pressman and a press and photographs or photostats of a few letters of the alphabet presumably used in printing.

Marlon Press -Author’s Original copy typescript copy (about 35 sheets) with numerous corrections. It is not known if this is the entire manuscript.

Marion Press -Notes typescript of the section of the Marion Press History which contain the notes. These type scripts consist of 50 sheets. There is also a carbon copy of a letter to Mr. Larremore, probably written by Mr. Rogers.

Marlon Press -Lemperly, Hilllard and Hopkins nine sheets in typescript (2 copies). It is not clear where this brief essay fits into the Marion Press history, and perhaps it was never published.

Marlon Press -Joseph Rogers’ copy of the Trial Proofs of Chapters VII and VIII

Check List -Joseph Rogers' final draft carbon copy these typescript sheets contain numerous corrections.

Distribution of copies of the MARION PRESS history distribution notes written on several pages torn out from a desk calendar. The record was maintained by Louis J. Bailey, director of the Queens Borough Public Library.

Marion Press Essay -Revised Form. Author’s Copy we have not been able to locate a published version of this essay. Judging by the essay in this file, it may have been intended for publication sometime in 1938 but perhaps the project was never carried out. The author of the essay was Mr. Larremore. The file contains three postcards from Larremore to Mr. George Rogers at the Queens Borough Public Library; also one letter to him, and two carbon copies of letters sent by Mr. Rogers to Mr. Larremore. All deal with corrections on the manuscript. The essay itself is in typescript (20 to 25 pages) and contains numerous corrections.

Marlon Press Essay -First Carbon There are 24 sheets in this item. In type script with no corrections.

Check List -Items Used 1895-1906 consists of printed forms, for the most part listing "Catch Title"; "Colophon”; "Size"; "no. Pages"; "Description of title-page if unusual"; and similar subjects. Evidently these were the rough sheets prepared for each entry in the check list. These probably covered the items listed in the check-list which were published during 1895-1907. Filled in manuscript, but some typed sheets accompany some of the forms.

Check List -Items Used 1907-1917 similar to the above, but for the years shown.

Check List -Items Used and those with queried dates. 1918-1931 similar to the above, but for the years shown.

Check List (Non Commercial Items) prepared by the Larremores 1936-1937 this check list was the author’s original copy. Unlike the final published form, this is arranged in alphabetical order rather than chronologically. It is in typescript with many corrections.

Check List -Typed Copy similar to the above but this is a clean copy with no corrections.

Check List -Mr. Anderson’s Notes consists of seven sheets, four in typescript and three in manuscript.

Correspondence apparently this file is that of the director of the Queens Borough Public Library, Mr. Louis J. Bailey. Virtually all letters are carbon copies sent to Mr. Bailey, the original going to the other correspondents. Essentially, the correspondence is between Mr. Larremore and George W. Van Vechten, the printer of the Marion Press history. Other letters are between Mr. Larremore and Mr. Rogers, but again, these are the carbons which were sent to Mr. Bailey. Quite often, as part of the correspondence, proof sheets or typescripts or the like accompany the letters making the file a large one because of this, though the letters them selves are relatively few. Dated 1942 with perhaps one or two exceptions which may be 1941.

Miscellaneous a very small file containing a carbon copy of an "Inventory (of) Materials Loaned to the Queens Borough Public Library by Mr. and Mrs, Thomas H, Larremore 4/5/40” a blank form containing a resolution regarding bidding on the printing of the Marion Press history; a tear-sheet from the book, Origin and Antiquity of Heraldry; two or three sheets (perhaps proof sheets) from the Marion Press history; and about 50 copies of the bookplate of Clarence Ludlum which was printed by the Marion Press.

Preferred Citation

Published citations should take the following form:

Creator of item, date of item (if known), identification of item, if a photograph its control number. The Thomas A. Larremore and Amy Hopkins Miscellaneous Papers Regarding the Marion Press Addendum 1, Archives at Queens Library, Queens Borough Public Library.

Provenance

One more word of explanation should be noted. It would seem that the items in this segment of the collection were not that of the Larremore's, but rather were the papers of Mr. Louis J. Bailey, director of the QBPL. As explained previously, the QBPL was, of course, involved in the project of publishing the Marion Press history.

This segment consists of the actual drafts of THE MARION PRESS A SURVEY AND A CHECK-LIST. Accompanying these drafts one occasionally finds some correspondence relative to them. By and large, as one might suppose, much of this material is rather difficult to read. There are many carbon sheets, smudges, and brittle sheets.

Whenever possible, we have grouped these newly found papers under the same or approximate same headings with which we found them, headings presumably placed there by the persons most directly involved in the project. We have tried to retain the envelopes wherein they were originally contained and have usually used wording found on them for headings.
