Biographical/Historical note

Emil Robert Lucev was born September 27, 1933 at Rockaway Beach Hospital, Beach 85th Street and Java Place, to Emil Gerald Lucev and Anna Mary Lewis. Emil Gerald Lucev was born in Prvika’Lucka, Croatia in 1905. He immigrated to the United States in 1927. He became an accomplished chef and worked in a number of large hotels in New York City. Anna Mary Lewis was born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1911 and her family moved to the Rockaways soon after. They married in 1931 at St. Rose Roman Catholic Church in Rockaway Beach. The Lucevs had three children, Emil Robert, Anthony and Almeda.

At ten years of age Emil began work at his grandfather Mike Louis’ Arverne Hygeia Ice Company. After that he worked at Paramount Carton, Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 79 Street as a finishing machine adjuster. He attended Jacob Haaren High School where he studied refrigeration. When he was drafted into the Army they sent him to refrigeration school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. After graduating from Fort Belvoir, he became an instructor at the school.

After the Army, Emil returned to the Rockaways where he met Aldine Caroline Gartland and married her on June 29, 1959. Eventually they had four children, Michael, Emil Robert, Jr., Aldine and Katherine.

Emil returned to Paramount Carton’s finishing department and worked there until 1961 when he became a private security guard for the New York Daily News. In 1991 Emil lost his job when new owners laid-off the private security force.

In the mid 1970’s, Emil and his sons started collecting antique Rockaway bottles from Jamaica Bay. To expand on their collection, he began to research the origins of the embossed names on the bottles. This researched piqued his interest in the history of his home peninsula, beginning his career as an historian and his long association withThe Wave. He made quick friends with The Wave’s publisher Leon Locke and began visiting the Archives at Queens Library.

By the early 1980’s Emil was documenting every aspect of the peninsula, becoming the authority on Rockaway history. He eventually became the Historical Editor forThe Waveand wrote a weekly column titled “Historical Views of the Rockaways.” Many of the topics for his articles were Emil’s interests. However, many of the topics for his articles came from Rockaway residents and people who used to live on the Rockaways writing him about a Rockaways’ company, building, person, map or street.

He documented almost every historical aspect of the Rockaways, but he has strong attachment and is extremely proud of his work on the following.

His work researching the peninsula’s early amusement parks created byLaMarcus Adna Thompson and George C. Tilyou. Emil concludes Thompson moved hisMidway, Scenic Railway and other attractions to the Rockaways from Coney Islandbecause of President William McKinley’s assassination.
In 1991, Emil became involved with the restoration and history of the CornellCemetery. He worked with Stanley Cogan, President of the Queens HistoricalSociety and Cornell Cemetery Corporation President to restore the cemetery andto designate it a New York City Landmark. He researched the history of thecemetery, the Cornell family and the land they owned.
In 1986 Emil was very involved with the re-enactment of the NC-4trans-Atlantic flight, the first flight across the Atlantic. He wrote a bookletabout the history of the flight.
His work putting togetherThe Wave’scentennialand 110th anniversary editions.
His work writing an article “Irishtown, Rockaway” for theIrish Echo
His work assisting the schools, hospitals, churches, organizations and firedepartments to document their history.
His work with the Rockaway Museum.
His work on the Rockaways’ Tercentennial celebration in 1985.
His work on the 1986 time capsule buried at the Doughboy Monument at Beach 95Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
His documentation of the beaches and Boardwalk during his beach and boardwalks throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

Emil often cites a Jamaica Bay boat trip as the motivation for making him a serious and thorough historian. During a boat trip in Jamaica Bay with many of Queens’ dignitaries, authors and politicians, Leon Locke volunteered Emil to act as the tour guide. At the end of the trip everyone was impressed by his knowledge and asked him where he went to school. He replied Jacob Haaren High School and “on the job training.” Upon hearing this, the attendees shunned him for the rest of the trip. His work on the trip did not end there. He had to help navigate the boat out of Jamaica Bay because the captain was not current with the bay’s channels. This slight spurred Emil to work even harder to document every aspect of the peninsula.

All of his work culminated into his greatest achievement, the postcard history bookThe Rockawayspublished in 2007.

His papers provide rich documentation of how the Rockaways developed from the peninsula’s Native American inhabitants to its current urban inhabitants.

Each series, sub series and sub sub series contains one or more of the following types of documents: clippings, correspondence, ephemera, maps, notes, photographs, publications and writings. Many of the series contain the articles Mr. Lucev, Sr. wrote forThe Waveand other local newspapers and the article’s supporting material. Many of the maps and publications include Mr. Lucev Sr.’s notations and comments. For example on newer maps he drew old property lines to show their relationship to current streets.

Not all the series are described in this Scope and Content Note; therefore researchers must use this document, the Creators Sketch and the Inventory to uncover material.

The series Arverne, 4 folders, 1817-1990, documents Mr. Lucev Sr.’s research on the Arverne neighborhood, its people, streets and development. The sub series Disputes, Division Avenue, 1 folder, 1817-ca. 1989 contains Mr. Lucev Sr.’s clippings, correspondence, maps and notes used to research the Division Avenue, how it got its name (now Beach 82nd Street) and early property owners. The sub series Nehemiah vs. Market Rate Housing, 1 folder 1987-1987, contains clippings, correspondence, maps and notes documenting the Queens Citizens Organization and the East Brooklyn Churches efforts to build subsidized Nehemiah homes in Arverne and Mr. Lucev Sr.’s opposition to the construction. The sub series Reports, Development Brochures, 1 folder, 1966, 1990, contains redevelopment reports of the Arverne neighborhood.

The series Beach walk Photograph Captions and Photographs, 1973-2000, 1 folder, 240 photographs, contains photographs Mr. Lucev, Sr. took as he explored the beaches from Far Rockaway to Rockaway Point. The photographs are in black and white and color and range in size from 4x5 to 5 x 17 panoramic photographs.

The series Boardwalk, 1994-2002, 4 folders, 100 photographs, contains clippings, correspondence, maps, notes and photographs about the history, construction, repair and maintenance of the whole Boardwalk. The photographs, taken by Mr. Lucev, document the city’s efforts and lack of efforts to maintain and repair the Boardwalk.

The series Broad Channel, Raunt, Goose Creek, Ruffle Bar, 1889-2007, 6 folders, 68 photographs, 1 badge, documents Jamaica Bay’s islands and sand bars in the form of clippings, correspondence, maps, notes, photographs and publications. The photographs in the sub series, Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, 1986-2000, 1 folder, 68 photographs, 1 badge are of the fire department’s anniversary celebration and the fire house.

The largest series, Cornell Cemetery Corporation, 1991-2001, 8 folders, 320 photographs, documents Mr. Lucev, Sr.’s early and active involvement with the corporation to designate the Cornell Cemetery a New York City landmark. The many photographs are of the first and frequent subsequent trips Mr. Lucev, Stanley Cogan, Queens Historical Society President and corporation president and others took to the cemetery; the archeological digs conducted on the cemetery; and the corporation’s annual meetings.

Affiliated with Cornell Cemetery Corporation series are other Cornell family series, in which they document members of the Cornell family, the family’s genealogy and their landownership on the peninsula.
