Historical/Biographical Note
The Reverend John Meury was minister of the Hopkins German Presbyterian Church located at the corner of Hopkins and Troop Avenue in Brooklyn. Because of a lack of biographical information there is some question if he is the same clergyman who had the middle name, Nicholas, though it would appear that these are one and the same individual. Nevertheless, none of his materials bear the middle name. Some biographical information can be obtained from obituaries of his daughter, Emilie Jane Meury written, for example, in the "Brooklyn Eagle" for Aug 26, 1912 and the "New York Times” for Aug 27, 1912.
The Rev. Meury died in 1887, his daughter in 1912 at the age of 47. At the time of her death, even though a young woman, she was the "oldest Probationary officer in point of service in Brooklyn". One of her sisters was the wife of the well-known local historian, Eugene Armbruster.

Scope and Content Note
The collection consists exclusively of small bound volumes, though occasionally one finds a few notes or memoranda inserted in some of them. More specifically, there are eighteen volumes, seven of them belonging to the Rev. Meury, eleven of them to his daughter Emily.
Rev. John Meury Diaries and/or Notebooks these volumes with the exception of one volume titled "Daybook" and covering 1880-1883, most are rather fragmentary in nature. Most are written in German and notations are but the briefest usually consisting of but a name and address with an occasional comment. Some baptisms, confirmations, burials and similar church functions performed by the Reverend are mentioned.
The earliest volume bears an 1863 date, the latest, 1887. There is also an undated small address book. With the exception of the earliest volume which is in ink, nearly all entries in the other volume are in pencil, many are difficult to read. The 1863 volume evidently contains listings of chapters and verses of the Bible which the Reverend may have used as texts for sermons. Evidently he preached in a number of churches not only in present-day Kings County, but in one or two sections of Manhattan, Queens and what is now the Bronx.
Emilie (Emily) Jane Meury Diaries and/or Notebooks two volumes in this series do not bear the name of Miss Meury, but are in all probability hers. One is an undated address book, the other a diary for 1902. The period covered by these volumes is ca. 1902-1912. Even though many volumes have the word "diary” as their title, they are more in the nature of address books or very brief note books. Some mention of her court related activities is made but again, rather briefly. The overwhelming majority of entries are in pencil.
Dropped in this file are five miscellaneous loose notes or other items which may or may not have been part of the Meury Collection. Included is a small photograph of a young woman. As stated, however, we have no way of knowing if these items were part of the collection, and if the photograph was that of Miss Meury.
