Historical/Biographical Note
The Metzger family lived in Flushing, Whitestone and Broad Channel, N.Y. Charles W. Metzger was born 28 March 1860 in Flushing and died 25 September 1919. He was employed as a locomotive engineer. His wife Ann Metzger was born Ann Heid in 1862 and died 5 January 1939. Their daughter Sarah Metzger lived almost all her life in Queens, first in Whitestone and then on Broad Channel. Sarah Metzger was very active in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and the Epworth League. She participated in both organizations with eagerness and devotion common among their participants. Little else is know about Sarah Metzger and the Metzger family.

Scope and Content Note
The Metzger Family Papers document the lives of Charles, Ann, Bessie, and Sarah Metzger, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, and the Epworth League, in the form of artifacts, correspondence, financial papers, medical records, photographs, and printed material.
The series Bessie Metzger (1902, 1 folder) contains an immunization certification.
The series Charles and Ann Metzger (1896-1939, 3 folders) contain three sub series Financial Papers (1896-1919, 1 folder), Death Certificates (1919, 1939, 1 folder) and Haverstick Estate Papers and Robinson Estate Papers (1913-1916, 1 folder). The Financial Papers sub series contains some of Charles Metzger’s medical and business receipts. The Death Certificates sub series contains both certificates for Charles and Ann Metzger. The Haverstick Estate Papers and Robinson Estate Papers sub series contains a note from the lawyer of the Haverstick Estate regarding the estate of Rosa Haverstick a relative of Charles, including an inventory of her estate. Also included in this sub series is a Notice of Settlement of Account for Charles Robinson.
The largest series of the Metzger Family Papers is the Sarah Metzger (1904-1955, n.d., 15 folders) series. The Correspondence (1904-1941, n.d., 1 folder) sub series documents Sarah Metzger’s life long friendships with her Whitestone neighbors.
The Sarah Metzger series includes two sub series, the Epworth League (1913, 1919, 1921, 1 folder) and Women’s Christian Temperance Union (1915-1924, 7 folders), documenting her active participation in these two groups.
The Epworth League (1913, 1919, 1921, 1 folder) sub series contains a diary of a trip Sarah took to Jamesport to meet with Rev. William Layton and to visit the League’s campgrounds. The Printed Materials (1919, 1921, 2 items) sub sub series contains two programs of League events. The Printed Materials (1952, 1957, n.d., 1 folder) sub series contains newspaper articles.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union (1915-1924, 7 folders) sub series contains Sarah Metzger’s diary (1924, 1 folder) from her trip to the Golden Jubilee Convention in Albany, in which she describes in detail the activities of the Convention and a program and song sheet from the convention. The sub sub series Whitestone Branch Printed Material (1915-1924, 1 folder) contains a 1905-1906 yearbook, songbooks and sheets, and Constitution and by-laws. The sub sub series National Organization Printed Material (1916-1927, n.d., 3 folders) contains a 1927 yearbook from the Young People’s Branch (YPB) of the WCTU, YPB publications such as Alcohol in Experience and Experiment, songbooks and sheets, and “Life Sketches” of prominent WCTU members.

The division does not know the provenance of the papers.
Access Restrictions
Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and show their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
