Abstract: The Arthur Murray Collection (196 photographs, 1873-1960) contains photographs highlighting the people, scenery, and events of Suffolk County, N.Y. The main focus is on buildings, farms, and post offices. Villages that are photographed include Centereach, Lake Ronkonkoma, and Stony Brook. These villages are all located in Suffolk County. There are several portraits of the Hawkings’ Baseball team from the 1930’s. The collection consists of negatives.

Historical/Biographical Note

Arthur Murray was a resident of Ronkonkoma, NY, a hamlet located in the town of Islip, who was a collector of historical images from Long Islands past. Mr. Murray collected numerous photographs and stain glassed images from the early 1900’s.

Scope and Content Note

The Arthur Murray Photograph Collection (196 photographs, 1873 -1960) contains photographs that are of the scenery, people, and events of Suffolk County, NY. Most of the photographs cover the villages of Stony Brook, Medford, Coram, and Selden. There are photographs of buildings, farms, and the Hawkings’ Baseball Team.

Provenance

Queens Library received the photographs in May 1975 after they were donated by Mr. Murray’s widow.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
