Historical/Biographical Note

In 1948 New York City celebrated its "Golden Jubilee", that is, the Consolidation of the Five Boroughs (Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island) into what is now New York City. This Consolidation took place on January 1, 1898.

As part of this celebration, a contest opened to the public and parochial elementary, junior high and high school students was sponsored by the Queens Golden Anniversary Committee, probably in conjunction with other institutions such as the "Long Island Press". The contest concerned local history, and evidently schools were asked to compile scrapbooks which in one way or the other dealt with that subject. Apparently the prize winning scrapbooks were turned over to the Archives at Queens Library of the Queens Borough Public Library. It is not known for sure, however, if all winning volumes were turned over, or if at any time after they were given they may have been reclaimed by any of the schools In question. At any event, we have gathered these scrapbooks together because of their uniqueness and have formed this collection.

Scope and Content Note

The scrapbooks vary in size and makeup. Two of them do not have the conventional cardboard covers but rather they have wood covers. It is not known for certain if prizes were awarded on separate basis of public and parochial schools. They were definitely awarded separately on the basis of age group, that is, elementary, junior high or high. A complete list follows.

This tist will give name of school whose students compiled the scrapbook, and the area in which the school was located. Titles will be provided as well, generally as found on the cover of the volume. Usually, there are sub-titles inside the volume which provide a more specific subject. Generally speaking, however, the volumes stress local history in one way or another, especially, in many cases, the history of the locale in which the school was located.

Essentially, the volumes consist of similar material, namely, photographs and brief compositions or descriptions written by the students. In many Instances there are also watercolor or tempera paintings. As mentioned previously, they all deal with local history in one way or another and many of the volumes gathered by the Catholic parochial schools contain information on the Catholic Church on Long Island. There is a wide variety In size, several being oversized. These sizes, as well as an approximate number of sheets they contain will be found on the list. The scrapbooks are not listed in any special order. All told, there are sixteen volumes.
