Abstract: NYC Tax Photographs (32 photographs, 1939-1941) contains photographs highlighting the homes of Queens, N.Y. In 1939 the city government began the process of taking pictures for every single home in the five boroughs. These photographs were to be used to appraise real property for tax purposes. The final tally was 720,000 images. The Queens Library Archives has 32 images from the collection.

Historical/Biographical Note

NYC Tax Photographs (32 photographs, 1939-1941) contain photographs highlighting the homes of Queens, N.Y. In 1939 the city government began the process of taking pictures for every single home in the five boroughs. These photographs were to be used to appraise real property for tax purposes. In the early 1980’s the New York City Department of Finance decided that many of the images from the original process needed to be updated. The process began again in 1983 and lasted until 1988. Many of the original images are held and stored at the New York City Municipal Archives. The Queens Library Archives has 32 images from the collection.

Scope and Content Note

The NYC Tax Photographs (42 photographs, 1939 -1941) contains photographs of homes in Queens County, NY. The bulk of the photographs cover the areas of Elmhurst, and Rego Park. There are also photographs for prominent Queens’ roads like 63rd Drive, Queens Blvd., and Woodhaven Blvd.

The Archives received these prints by donation.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
