Historical/Biographical Note

First planned in 1935 the 1939/1940 World’s Fair was put together by an organization that became the New York World’s Fair Corporation. The corporation was led by former New York City Police Commissioner Grover A. Whalen. The site of the fair was a former “ash dump” on 1,255 acres of land that was located in Flushing Meadow. Ground was broken on June 29, 1936. The baseball teams in New York (Dodgers, Giants, and Yankees) promoted the fair in 1938 with patches that they wore on their Baseball uniforms. The corporation decided that the fair colors would be orange & blue with the theme being “Building the World of Tomorrow”. Its symbols were the Trylon (700 feet pinnacle) and Persisphere (200 feet polished globe). The fair included pavilions and exhibits from thirty-three states and sixty countries.

The New York World’s Fair Corporation invested 67 million dollars into the fair and made sure that Fair exhibits were made up of different themes and zones. New York City donated 26.7 million to the fair, the federal government donated 3 million, New York State 6.2 million, and foreign countries donated 30 million. The main exhibits fell under seven diverse zones: amusement, communications, community interests, food, government, production and distribution, and transportation. The most popular exhibits at the fair were “Futurama”, depicting a world in 1960, and “Aquacade”. The fair saw the first florescent light fixtures and drew 44 million attendees. Among the notable displays were television, air conditioning, color film, nylon stockings, and diesel engines. The Grand opening took place on Sunday April 30, 1939 with a speech by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt that was broadcasted on television. The launch of the fair also coincided with the 150th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration.

The 1939 portion of the fair took place from April to October 1939. The 1940 portion took place from April to October 1940 with a closing date of October 27, 1940. In 1940 the theme of the fair was changed to “For peace & freedom” with the beginnings of political tension that would ultimately lead to World War II. On July 4, 1940 a bomb exploded at the British Empire Exhibition that killed two police officers. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor the Japanese Exhibit was torn down.

Generating 48 million in revenue the 1939/1940 fair was not deemed a financial success but is remembered more fondly than the 1964/1965 World’s Fair.

New York City Park’s Commissioner, Robert Moses, was president of the World’s Fair Corporation. The World’s Fair Corporation issued 29.8 million in bonds and with a loan from the city, of 24 million, went about the development of a World’s Fair in Queens. The corporation emphasized the benefits for the city in having the fair which included 10,000 jobs for construction and another 30 to 40,000 in Fair employees. The fair coincided with the 300th anniversary of the name New York. The theme of the fair was “Peace through Understanding” and was symbolized by the “Unisphere” created by the U.S. Steel company. Unlike the 1939 fair the 1964/65 fair was not sanctioned by the Bureau of International Expositions.

The development of the fair brought about the widening of the Grand Central Parkway and Whitestone expressway. The Van Wyck expressway was also extended and Shea Stadium was constructed. The site of the fair was developed into what is now known as Flushing Meadow/Corona Park. The exhibits included eight countries, twenty four states, the federal government, New York City, and corporations. The corporate influence is why the 1964/1965 fair is not as fondly remembered as the fair from 1939/1940. President John F. Kennedy attended the ground breaking ceremony in 1962. President Lyndon B. Johnson attended the opening of the fair on April 22, 1964. Former President Harry Truman and New York State Governor Nelson Rockefeller were also in attendance. The fair encountered protests from several groups including the Congress of Racial Equality led by James Farmer. No structure was allowed to be more than 80 feet. The fair was open to the public from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily including Sundays and holidays. Standout exhibits included the computers from the IBM pavilion, a lifelike statue of Abraham Lincoln, the New York City pavilion that included a structure with every building in the five boroughs, “Futurama 2” an update of the popular exhibit from 1939 this time focusing on the year 2064, and the introduction of the Belgian Waffle.

The 1964 portion of the fair took place from April 22 to October 18th 1964. The 1965 portion of the fair started on April 21 and ended on October 17th 1965. The 1964 fair reported 27 million attendees and the 1965 fair reported 24 million. Overall the fair ran a deficit of 21 million dollars. The legacy of the fair can still be seen in the structures that were left behind in the park. The Unisphere, the Singer Bowl, the Port Authority Heliport, and Hall of Science are still located in Flushing Meadow Park. The New York City Pavilion was turned into the Queens Museum and still operates today.

A push to have a fourth World’s Fair in New York was discussed as early as 1970. The New York World’s Fair 1989 Corporation was incorporated on February 2, 1981. The Not-For-Profit organization wanted Queens to have its third World’s Fair in 1989 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s Inauguration. David Oats was the leader of the organization and had actually become friends with Robert Moses after the Park’s commissioner saw him exploring the park’s fairgrounds during the development of the fair in 1962. The organization broke themselves down into different committees that would come up with ideas on fair themes and having the fair represented in all five of the New York City boroughs. The five boroughs would have various aspects of the overall theme of the fair which was to be “Communication: Together…Touching Tomorrow”.

Queens: The Fairgrounds containing the International, ceremonial, entertainment, and athletic components. Bronx: The Proving Grounds containing a joint industrial-governmental exhibition focusing on urban renewal in the area. Brooklyn: The Fun Grounds an amusement area that would include the “parachute jump”. Manhattan: The World Festival would focus on discussions on the U.S. Constitution and its place in the new century. Staten Island: Earth Grounds focusing on the examination of Ecology in an urban nation.

Discussion of the new World’s Fair led to the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts having a 1964/1965 World’s Fair Retrospective called “The Mighty Fair”. A proposal was written and presented to highlight the benefits of having a fair in Queens as well as the possible funding of the event. The 1989 World’s Fair had garnered plenty of public support but ultimately did not take place.
