Scope and Content Note
The dozen or so documents in this collection are either undated or dated 1817, the year, evidently in which a court case developed regarding a provision or provisions in Mr. Brush's will. This related to a former slave of Mr. Brush, James Williams, to whom Brush had granted his freedom and had provided that he (Williams) and another slave, Colin, were to receive all his "wearing apparel or in lieu thereof two hundred dollars each, to be paid out at the discretion of (the) executors…”. The executors of the will were S. Wilkins (perhaps a relative of Brush's wife Euphemia Wilkins Brush) and L. Bradish.
The documents consist of some legal briefs or possibly drafts of the same; some abstracts of the court case; and some receipted bills, all of which are marked “in Chancery”, perhaps meaning being used in the case and official court papers.
