Scope and Content Note

The collection consists almost exclusively of Invitations and Souvenir Programs issued on special occasions, and related items which Mr. Pople received during the period 1904 to 1919. Not all years are represented, however, and the heaviest concentration is for 1909 to 1913. The invitations are to special civic functions, and some of them, as well as the souvenir programs, are rather ornate in make-up. The following are listed as a sampling:

Invitation from the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to inspect the Rapid Transit Subway on Oct 27, 1904 prior to its opening for public service.

Menu of the First Annual Dinner of the Business Men's Association Dinner of Flushing held on Mar 20, 1906

Menu of Dinner tendered to Mr. George Pople (this was the father of George W. Pople) by the Press Club of Flushing Jan 26, 1907.

List of Guests at the Complimentary Dinner tendered to Hon. Herman A. Metz on Apr 15, 1909,

Official Program of the Hudson-Fulton Celebration held during the period of Sep 25 to Oct 9, 1909.

Menu of the National Democratic Club annual Jefferson Day Dinner held Apr 13, 1912.

Invitation to Banquet tendered to the Honorable William Russell Wilcox on May 5, 1913/

Program of Memorial Services held for New York City Mayor, William J. Gaynor on Sep 22, 1913.

The collection also contains some miscellaneous items, more specifically, three letters addressed to Mr. Pople, including two letters from William J. Gaynor; a newspaper clipping dated 1902; two passes issued in 1868 admitting the bearer to the United States Senate Impeachment Proceedings against the president; and an invitation to a Free Mason service held on Jun 19, 1940.

Besides the above, the collection also includes about 20 commemorative medals or medallions or badges of various sizes (aluminum, bronze or silver plated probably). With these are some half dozen silk badges; a small commemorative plaque commemorating Grace Episcopal Church of Jamaica; an 8" metal sword bearing no identification and perhaps also commemorating an Episcopal church, and probably intended to be used as a letter opener; and a ceramic pen and pencil tray commemorating the Bowne House of Flushing, issued ca. 1890. The medals were issued on such occasions as the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge; the running of the first train over the Williamsburgh Bridge and the celebration of the completion of the Nassau Water Works. Dates vary ca. 1859 to 1915 and many of them are in tarnished condition. Perhaps they may have been collected by Mr. Pople as well as his father before him.
