Historical/Biographical Note
Jackson Heights was created as a Garden Community, in 1916, by Edward A. MacDougall. Mr. MacDougall was president of the Queens Corporation and along with a team of architects and planners built what is believed to be the first garden city in America. Over a century later Jackson Heights still thrives as one of the most diverse and populous areas in Queens.
One of the best ways to see the diversity in Jackson Heights is by observing their mix of restaurants and eateries. Walking through Jackson Heights brings a varied mix of languages, cultures, and aromas from a divers list of countries and backgrounds. To advertise their shops and generate customers many restaurants create menus to pass out on the street or to include with deliveries to clients. Jackson Heights’ resident, Janice Quinter, collected many of the menus over the years and donated them to the Queens Library Archives in February 2015. The menus can give an idea of the eclectic mix of cultures in Jackson Heights from the early 1990s to the mid 2010s.
