Historical/Biographical Note
Webster’s New College Dictionary defines a newsletter as a printed sheet, pamphlet, or small newspaper containing news or information of interest chiefly to a special group. The Queens Neighborhood Newsletter collection (1 box, 1997-2013) contains various newsletters chronicling events in Queens’ neighborhoods.
The bulk of the collection consists of material from neighborhood Civic Associations. These Civic Associations are made up of people from the local community and relate significant events that they think are important to the neighborhood and surrounding community. These newsletters give an idea about what was happening in a specific area during a period of time.
Rosedale resident, Fred Kress, donated these materials to the Queens Library archives during the years of 2012-2013. Mr. Kress is interested in the upkeep of communities and parks in all of New York City. Mr. Kress is the president of the Cornucopia Society, an organization devoted to providing assistance to human services such as food, clothing, and cash. The organization is located in Springfield Gardens, Queens.

Scope and Content Note
The Queens Neighborhood Newsletters Collection (1 box, 1997-2013) consists of various series:
The Churches (3 folders, 2005; 2011-2013) series collects newsletters from the Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Church. There are several copies of “The Messenger” a monthly newsletter created and released by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rosedale, NY. The newsletter presents a calendar of Church events, Pastor and Editor Notes, and small articles on significant happenings for the members of the Church’s congregation.
Community Boards (1 folder, 2004; 2011-2012) consists of copies of “The Sentinel”, a newsletter created by Community Board 13 in Queens County. Community Board 13 represents neighborhoods in Southeast Queens. The newsletter highlights overviews of meetings, prior votes, and renewal applications.
The Neighborhoods (11 folders, 1997-2013) series is the largest series in the collection. Many communities have Civic Associations made up of residents that meet up weekly/monthly to discuss community events and activities. This series includes newsletters from areas such as Bay Terrace, Bellerose, Creedmoor, North Bellerose, Queens Village, Rocky Hill, Rosedale, and West Cunningham Park. These newsletters discuss possible businesses moving into the neighborhood, vandalism, meetings with elected officials, and garbage disposal.
