Historical/Biographical Note

Egbert Benson (1746-1833) was the first Attorney General of the State of New York. He also held other political offices, such as Chief Judge of the Second Circuit Court of the United States, as well as being a member of the Continental Congress.

He is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Jamaica, his grave being designated by an historical marker. The Benson Family was among the very earliest Dutch families to settle in Manhattan.

Scope and Content Note

From an examination of the items in this small collection (ca. 50 items), it would appear that it resulted largely from the activities of Arthur D. Benson to have an historical marker erected over the grave of his ancestor, the first Attorney General of New York State.

Almost half of the collection consists of letters (primarily typewritten) addressed by Mr. Benson to Richard B. Sealock, Archives at Queens Library Head. These are dated 1938 for the most part and describe some of the researches made by Benson concerning his famous forbearer, as well as some of his efforts to see that the historical marker was placed. Some letters make mention of a few photographs or other items concerning the Benson family donated to the Library. These photographs are probably the same ones which are included in this collection.

The other half of the collection is essentially composed of genealogical notes concerning the Benson family gathered by Mr. Arthur Benson. These are principally in carbon typescript. There are also about a dozen photographs of various family members, most of which have accompanying genealogical information. This data was probably gathered by Mr. Benson in the early 1930s.
