Historical/Biographical Note
This small collection which deals with an ocean voyage is, unfortunately, not identified in any way. We surmise that the documents in it were maintained by a young individual, said individual having made an ocean trip to Europe in the summer of 1901. The trip was made aboard the German ship “Hohenzollern” which set sail on June 22, 1901 from Brooklyn to Genoa via Gibraltar and Naples. We are ascribing the collection to a member of the Bross Family of Brooklyn even though said name does not appear on the passenger list (included among the miscellaneous documents). The name does appear, however, on the first page of a diary maintained of the voyage where an individual is called “Grandmother Bross”. This perhaps indicates that the diarist was related to this person, probably on the maternal side.

Scope and Content Note
The first series, Diary and Related Documents, consists of a diary maintained not in a book but on some 31 sheets of paper, written in pencil, and partially smudged or illegible in some places. It is titled “Our Trip to Europe”. Brief glimpses of several western European countries are included. With this diary is another similar one (probably maintained by the same individual) written on sheets bearing the letterhead of “The Beese Chemical Co. New York Office, 21-23 Ann Street”. This diary restricts itself evidently more to the sea voyage than actual land travel. There are only seven sheets to this small diary. The first sentence reads “Sailed on S.S. Hohenzollern from foot of Congress Street Brooklyn on Saturday June 22, 1901 at 11 o’clock. Grandmother Bross, Miss Marion (Stute?), W. W. Bross...were down to see us off.” Found with these small diaries are one of two sketches or drawings probably done by the diarist, one of them on the letterhead of the Cunard R.M.S. “Campania”, probably another ship on which the diarist and her family may have sailed.
Also as part of this series is a very small volume titled Ocean Ferry Log, evidently containing the diary (or at least part of it) mentioned above (7 sheets) transposed into it. This probably indicates that the loose sheets were considered as drafts by the diarist until such time that they could be transposed into this more formal looking diary, small as it is.
The second series, Printed Items, contains about 14 items. These include a volume titled My Ocean Trip published 1901 by Brentano in New York intended to be filled in as a diary-type volume, but which was not done in this case; a passenger list of the Hohenzollern (2 copies); a lunch and dinner menu of the ship; a brochure concerning Albert Paine’s book, Great White Way; and an unidentified postal card photograph showing a large group of passengers about to embark or disembark from a ship.
