Historical/Biographical Note

The Queens Family Cemetery Alliance Records (1 box, 1992-1995) highlights the creation of the Flushing based organization in the hopes of preserving cemeteries in Queens County. The group was created by Stanley Cogan after having a discussion with Ralph Perfetto, who was the Director of the State Division of Cemeteries, about the downtrodden state of four local cemeteries. Many of the members of the organization became involved with the group after reading an article in the Fall 1994 edition of the Queens Historical Society Newsletter entitled “The Death and Life of Queens Family Cemeteries”.

The group was mainly focused on four cemeteries in Queens County. The four cemeteries were: The Moore-Jackson Cemetery located in Woodside, the First Methodist Cemetery located in South Jamaica, the Brinkerhoff Cemetery located in Fresh Meadows, and the Prospect Cemetery in South Jamaica. Mr. Cogan had created this organization to help safeguard cemeteries from trash, squatters, and vandals. They hoped to attain enough support from the community and public officials to keep the cemeteries clean and respectful to the people and their families that reside there.
