Historical/Biographical Note

Not much is known of the Rose Family other than they were inhabitants of the Bridgehampton area (a few letters are addressed to Southampton) many more to Water Mill. Members of this family married into the Cook Family (See Collection C-l).

It is difficult to ascertain the correct relationships of the above members. For example, Anna Rose may be the same individual as Mrs. Henry Rose. Stephen and Henry Rose were probably brothers, and Lottie Rose may have been the daughter of one of them. Unfortunately, most of the letters which have been examined do not offer any clues.

Scope and Content Note

This collection is divided into the following sub-groups: Letters of Stephen Rose, Letters of Henry M. Rose, Letters of Mrs. Henry Rose, Letters of Anna Rose?, Letters of Miss Charlotte (Lottie) Rose, Letters of various other members of the Rose Family.

Only the fifth sub-group is of any sizeable amount, containing as it does about 160 items. Besides letters, the collection contains a few other items, such as, bills or receipts. There are, however, no bound volumes.

In virtually all instances, envelopes which originally enclosed the letters have not been removed since in some cases it is only said envelopes which identify the individual, and not the letter. Some other envelopes help identify the address of the individuals involved.

Some members of the Rose and Cook families intermarried. Therefore, The Cook Family Papers should also be consulted, especially in view of the fact that a few items from one collection may very well have been interspersed with items in the other collection.

The Sub-groups are described very briefly below.

Letters of Stephen Rose -ca. 9 items, dated 1807, and ca. 1825-1845. Bear both Bridgehampton and Southampton addresses and deal with business matters apparently. The 1807 item is a printed political form letter urging support of Republican candidates.

Letters of Henry M. Rose -ca. 25 items, dated. ca. 1850-1896. Bear both Bridgehampton and Water Mill addresses, and most letters are from relations.

Letters of Mrs. Henry Rose -ca. 6 items dated principally in the l870’s. Bear both Water Mill and Bridgehampton addresses. Principally from relations.

Letters of Anna Rose? -3 letters, two of which are dated 1868 and are apparently from a young lady, Cornelia.

Letters of Miss Charlotte (Lottie Rose) -ca. 160 items. This largest sub-group contains letters dated from 1870 to 1921. However, many years are not represented, and a large portion is not dated.

Included in the undated series is an 1789 letter addressed to a James Totten of New Bedford from Johannis E. Lott of Flatbush rejecting the formers application as a teacher. Either this is a fugitive item or perhaps Miss Cook obtained it since she herself was a teacher.

Virtually all the letters to Lottie are from relatives or friends. Though almost all are addressed to her at Water Mill, several are to Bridgehampton. Among correspondents are, cousins Henry and E. H. Cook; Henry J. Haynsworth; and William E. Gates and Julia Bender. Some letters are from Albany, New York City, and Elmira.

Letters of Various Other Members of the Rose Family ca 30 items. Some of these letters no doubt belong to some of the previous sub groups, but since they are not identified, they have been placed here. Mary C. Rose, Prank Rose and Joseph Latham are some of the names represented in this group. About half of the items are undated. Those that are fall between the 1840’s and the very early 1900’s.
