Historical/Biographical Note

Richard M. (Mather) Bayles (Mar 23, 1846-Nov 4, 1930), a native of Coram in the town of Brookhaven, was a noted local historian and descended on both his mother's and his father's side from the earliest settlers in the town. Though he researched and wrote mainly on Long Island topics, he was also interested in some other areas. Among some of his published works are Historical and Descriptive Sketches of Suffolk County (1874), Bayles’ Long Island Handbook (1885), History of Richmond County (1887), and History of Windham County Connecticut (1889). From 1886 to 1908 he contributed historical articles for the Brooklyn Eagle. During much of this period he was also a teacher as well as a surveyor. A sketch of his life written by the official historian of Brookhaven Town, Mr. Osborn Shaw, which appeared in the March 1946 issue of the Long Island Forum stated that "His home and little office was a Mecca for town assessors, surveyors and historians as well as people of all walks of life, seeking information about family ancestry, wanting to locate a lot or boundary line, or to have a title searched, asking about a will, wanting a deed made out".

For more than 40 years he served as clerk or trustee of the Middle Island School. During his later life he was chosen by the Brookhaven Town Board to be Town Historian, and he acted in that capacity till his death at the age of 84 years, Mr. Bayles had two sons, Thomas and Albert. This collection was acquired by the library from Mr. Thomas Bayles.

Scope and Content Note

Other items were added to this collection in January and June 1976 after the initial processing of the major portion. These are as follows:

The first series of this addendum is Diaries and Notebooks. Entries are rather brief, note-like in appearance. Some volumes are more complete than others, and some are written in pencil, rather than ink, and rather difficult to read with some entries all but obliterated. References are essentially to family life. The 1867 entries are in a diary for 1866, but this year has been crossed out and 1867 written over it. This same volume also contains a very few entries marked 1868. Volumes are all of small notebook size.

The second series, Manuscripts contains the following. Manuscript history written by Richard M. Bayles titled Primitive Days of Suffolk County, Manuscript of An Address Delivered by Richard M. Bayles in the Coram Methodist Church in 1893. History of the Coram Church, a listing of Sales of Plants and Fruit, 1910 and Typescript (with corrections or comments) of The Activities of the Middletown Presbyterian Church and its Ministers 1766-1946, by Thomas R. Bayles.

The listing of Sales of Plants and Fruit indicates in chronological order the individuals who purchased various plant and fruit products, presumably from Mr. Richard Mather, and give the prices paid. The List goes from April to September of 1910. The typescript (with corrections or comments) of The Activities of the Middletown Presbyterian Church and its Ministers 1766-1946, by Thomas R. Bayles dated January 1947 is prefaced by a page setting forth some of its background and mentioning some of the church records most of which "were lost in the fire...". Also pasted in is a T.L.S. of Herbert E. Moyer of the Presbyterian Church in Bridgehampton giving some additional background on the Middletown church.
