Historical/Biographical Note
Riverhead Savings Bank Timeline*
July 4, 1871 – Riverhead residents, Nat W. Foster and Orville B. Ackerly, met to discuss establishing a bank. They received support from various Riverhead government officials. | |
April 27, 1872 – Charter for the bank was granted. | |
May 31, 1872 – Riverhead Savings Bank opened for business. Dr. Richard Hampton Benjamin was the first Bank President. Sam Pugsley was the first depositor. | |
February 1873 – Bank opens everyday from 11 am – 1 pm. The bank originally only opened on Saturdays 1 pm – 4 pm. | |
1873 – Dr. Benjamin guided the bank through an Economic depression. | |
1878 – Riverhead Savings Bank had deposits of $301, 921. | |
September 1878 – The bank moved to a single room building across the street from the Dr. Benjamin residence. | |
1883 – Bank had deposits of $700,000; Moved to the Northwest Corner of Griffing Avenue and Main Street. | |
1886 – Dr. Benjamin died; Abraham B. Luce named new Bank President. | |
1891 – Nathaniel W. Foster becomes Bank President. | |
1892 – Riverhead Savings Bank moves to the lot of the old Suffolk Hotel. | |
1903-1918 – Presidents: Simeon S. Hawkins (1903-1906); Gilbert H. Ketcham (1906-1909); and Charles M. Blydenburgh (1909-1918). | |
1918 – Usher B. Howell is named President and will remain at that post until 1932. | |
1922- Over 8 million dollars in deposits. | |
1925 – Total assets exceed 10 million; bank moved to the Southwest Corner of Main Street and Peconic Avenue (May 30, 1925). | |
1932-1954 – Presidents: Erastus F. Post (1932 – 1937); George M. Burns (1937 – 1954). | |
1947 – 25 million in deposits. | |
1954-1968 – Bank Presidents: William A. Atlee (1954 – 1962); Earl H. Fischner (1962 – 1968). | |
1962-1968 – Deposits grew from 58 million to 85 million. | |
1968 – Savings Bank Branch office opened on June 22nd; Located at 2835 Middle Country Road in Lake Grove. | |
1969 – Albert A. Jewett becomes Riverhead Savings Bank president. | |
1970 – Second branch office opens on June 27, 1970; located at 580 Larkfield Road, Northport. |

Scope and Content Note
The Agreements, Brochures, and Correspondence series (9 folders, 1900-1966) contains a scrapbook, policies, titles, and correspondences from Riverhead Banks’ daily operations. This series also contains various bank policies and loan information.
Closed Mortgages (23 folders, 1884-1941) consists of binders full of mortgages that have been closed by the bank. This is the largest series in the collection.
The Home Owner’s Association series (4 folders, 1923-1937) contains loan applications and approvals and correspondence with potential loan receivers.
The Inspections series (14 folders, 1940-1944) contain results of inspections in Nassau and Queens Counties.
Interest Payments Books (5 books, 1888-1905) shows the various payments made by customers of the Riverhead Savings Bank.
The Mortgages series (14 folders, 1936-1944) contains information on mortgages controlled by the bank in Kings, Nassau, and Queens Counties.
The series entitled Photographs (36 prints and negatives, 1940-1941) contains images of the homes that the Riverhead Savings Bank had under mortgage.

These papers were donated to the Queens Library Archives.
Access Restrictions
Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
