Descriptive Summary

Creator Suffolk County Education Society
Title Suffolk County Education Society Records,
Dates: 1821-1850(Bulk 1821-1826)
Abstract: This collection consists of only one bound volume and some fifteen loose documents. The volume which covers the period, ca. 1821-1826 appears to be an account book in which were recorded brief financial transactions, especially the recording of receipts for payments received. The Society paid various individuals for boarding students, providing clothing, etc.. Perhaps, only about half or less than half of the volume was used by the Society for there are some later dated entries (ca. 1850) which evidently were used by someone else (perhaps a member of the Rose family) to record other financial transactions in no way bearing on the Society. The volume also contains a statement regarding the Society’s disbandment in 1826. Several pages have been torn out of volume.
Extent: 1 box, . 2 cubic feet
Identification: S-6
Location: The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library.

Historical/Biographical Note

We have not been able to learn much about the Suffolk County Education Society from published sources. According to what can be determined from an examination of the few items in this small collection, it would seem that the Society was active in the town of Southampton only, and not in the entire county. This cannot be ascertained with complete accuracy, however, because perhaps, only the papers reflecting on activities in this township survived. It also received contributions from what may have been local branches of the Society. Its activities ceased in 1826, and though its formation date is not known, it probably occurred around 1821.

Apparently, one of its chief officers was Mr. Stephen Rose of Bridgehampton. Another was John D. Gardiner of Sag Harbor. There is also a strong possibility that the Society may have been in actuality, one sponsored by a church in the area. For example, in a letter found in this collection dated Sep 2, 1823 and addressed to Mr. Rose by E. Phillips of East Hampton, there is a sentence which reads "At the meeting of Presbytery last week the Executive Committee of the Education Society resolved …” The Society referred to may be the Suffolk County Education Society, or, perhaps Mr. Phillips may have been referring to an education society of his church.

As gathered from information found in the papers comprising this collection, the Society sought to provide educational opportunities for those who could not afford it. Probably they provided this on all levels from grammar school to college.

The volume also contains a statement regarding the Society’s disbandment in 1826. Several pages have been torn out of volume.

The few documents in the collection are mainly receipted bills for expenses incurred. At least four refer to expenses incurred on behalf of a Negro youngster, Cato. There are also a few letters. Documents are dated 1821 to 1823 with one being undated, and one dated 1826.

Since, as already indicated, Mr. Stephen Rose was treasurer and a chief officer, it would appear that these few surviving records of the Society were in his personal possession, and passed through his family hands.
