Title | Browne Family Miscellaneous Documents,
Dates: | 1735-1805 | |
Abstract: | The names mentioned most frequently are Captain Francis Browne, evidently owner of two sloops, Hannah Browne, wife of the captain, and Flora Browne (Breese or Brosses), relationship unknown. Most documents are dated in the l760s, with a few somewhat earlier or later. Most are bills, some of them receipted, and there are only a few letters. No one theme seems to pervade the collection, bills being either for household goods purchased or for dockage expenses for the sloops. The few documents concerning Flora Browne (Breese or Brosses), however, appear to have been bills which she submitted to several individuals covering wool or other materials used for breeches.
Extent: | 1 box, .2 cubic feet
Identification: | B-16 | |
Location: | The material is located in the Archives at Queens Library. |
Historical/Biographical Note
No background information regarding the Browne Family has been researched. It is known, nevertheless, that the family was residents of Flushing. It is not thought that they were related in any way to another Browne family, that which descended from the famous Quaker, John Browne.
The name has been spelled in variant ways besides Browne. Illegible handwriting poses a difficulty, but other spellings appear to be Brown, Breese and perhaps Bross. It is also possible that the family may have altered the name slightly as well, but all documents in this collection do appear to have a unifying theme (with perhaps an exception or two), and it is primarily on this basis that they have been retained as a unit.
