Scope and Content Note
With perhaps one or two exceptions, all documents are military documents addressed to Skidmore by officers under his command or in some cases superiors. All or virtually all are from the following regiments -the 93rd, 100th, and 117th. These regiments apparently were stationed in the towns of Flushing, Newtown, Jamaica, Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
Documents consist largely of such items as Election Returns for Officers and Letters of Resignation; with perhaps a few oaths of Office, though a few other type documents are also included.
Among the others are such documents as a listing of various officers comprising the First Division which consisted of both the 22nd and 23rd Brigades; a form letter from (adjutant-General?) Rufus King, dated Mar 7, 1839 transmitting a form to be used for "accounts against the State for the services of the officers and members of Courts-Martial..."; General Skidmore’s Certificate of Appointment as Brigadier General (dated Jun 26, 1835 and signed by Governor William L. March); General Orders issued from Albany on Apr 22, 1843 accepting the General’s resignation and granting him an honorable discharge; and an Inspection Return of the 22nd Brigade, said document being a printed form about 60 inches long.
All documents have been filed by chronological order. We point out, however, that in many cases, several documents were grouped together, evidently during or shortly after they were produced, said documents being of various dates. These have always been filed by the latest date found among the documents so grouped.
