Historical/Biographical Note

On May 18, 1894, under the laws of New York State a corporation was chartered known as SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION OF JAMAICA for the purpose of erecting a monument to perpetuate the memory of the servicemen who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Shortly after a location was set aside at the Junction of what is now Merrick Blvd. and Hillside Avenue to receive the monument to be erected. The monument took the form of an angel holding a wreath in an extended arm (there are several photographs in the collection) and was dedicated on Memorial Day May 30th, 1896.

Some 30 years later, however, due to subway construction, increased traffic on Hillside Avenue, and the like, it was decided to remove the monument to a less congested area. It was not until 1960, however, that the monument was moved about .5 miles to the east on the grounds of a little park called Lafayette Park. The park is now called Major Mark Park.

Scope and Content Note

This small collection essentially consists of the records of the Association during the period when agitation occurred calling for the removal of the monument. A few older records do exist, nevertheless, these being rather vital in that they shed light on the very beginnings of the Association. The collection has been divided on the basis of the older and the newer records as follows.

19th Century Records these consist among other things of 3 indentures or real estate deeds pertaining to the land on which the monument was originally erected (dated 1894); a printed Order of Parade used at the Dedication of the Monument (May 30, 1896); a printed list of subscribers to the Monument; a manuscript list of the names of the servicemen from Jamaica who served in the Civil War; (an undated note states "Copied from Original Records” by George E. Tilly). ca. 10 items

20th Century Records Principally dated between 1954 and 1960, but also going back to 1920s and 1930s, these records consist of letters, memoranda, some minutes of meetings, and related documents. Most but not all of the letters are carbon copies sent out by Arthur M. Puller, Secretary of the Association. Essentially, matters of upkeep of the monument, and the relocation to another site are discussed. Most of this discussion is with city officials responsible for such things. Also included as part of this file is a 6 page article (bearing corrections) titled "Brief History of Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Jamaica”, by Charles H. Vosburgh. It is dated May 18, 1960. Vosburgh was evidently one of the active members. ca 80 items

Non-Textual Items these consist of about half a dozen photo graphs, majority of which were probably taken just before the monument was moved in 1960, but also including one taken in 1896 when it was first dedicated; 2 topographic maps of the area in question (1924); a topographical sketch of the area (1937); and a framed printed broadside titled "Americanism” issued on Memorial Day 1916, the 20th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Monument.
